New technology brings Mandarin classes to Feltonfleet

Feltonfleet is an independent day and weekly boarding Preparatory School for boys and girls aged 3 - 13 years. Excellent teaching, first-class facilities, and a unique family atmosphere help to make Feltonfleet a very special place. When James Lanzon, Head of Languages, wanted to introduce his students to Mandarin he found Toniks Language Clubs was a simple and effective solution.

Toniks Language Clubs at Feltonfleet take place every day for 40 minutes in a room equipped with a computer and broadband access to the internet.

The lessons are delivered online in a virtual classroom where the students see and speak with their tutor in real time, interacting in a variety of ways to maximise the learning process. The students find the technology fascinating, and readily adapt to the fact that the tutor is located in a different city!

On Mondays and Thursdays students learn Mandarin with Minyi, one of Toniks’ many qualified tutors. Minyi, a member of the Institute of Linguists, is originally from Beijing. She is delighted by the enthusiasm and abilities of her students.

Minyi, like all of Toniks’ tutors, has plenty of experience teaching children. She makes sure the lessons are fun and effective, and incorporates insights into Chinese culture into the lessons.

As lessons can be recorded, any student who misses a lesson can catch up by replaying it at a convenient time. Feltonfleet students also study Italian, Russian, German and Arabic.

Toniks have adapted to the requirements of the school’s timetable and curriculum, and the simplicity of the solution means new language clubs for different languages can begin whenever the school requires.
